ISLAMABAD (Zahid Yaqoob Khawaja): The Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), in collaboration with Nomad Gallery, inaugurated a group exhibition and documentary screening titled \u201cRekindling: The Kalash Narrative\u201d on Wednesday, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the Kalash community of Chitral.
The event was inaugurated by Senator Sherry Rehman at Gallery 6 of the PNCA. Speaking at the occasion, Senator Rehman said: \u201cI am honoured to inaugurate Rekindling: The Kalash Narrative, an exhibition that represents vital efforts in cultural preservation and indigenous storytelling. The Kalash community is a living treasure of Pakistan\u2019s diverse heritage. Initiatives like these ensure their traditions and knowledge systems are not only preserved but also celebrated.\u201d
Curated by Nageen Hyat, the exhibition is the outcome of a three-part artist residency exploring the traditions, landscapes, and contemporary challenges of the Kalash people. The project brings together the works of six renowned artists who have interpreted various facets of Kalash life through diverse mediums.
Participating artists include:
Akram Dost Baloch, whose work reflects social struggles and resilience.
M.A. Bhatti, known for portraiture and impressionistic depictions of cultural themes.
Ahmed Habib, whose pieces address the transformative role of education for Kalash women.
Riffat Khattak, presenting vibrant watercolours of the Kalash Valley.
Samreen Asif, exploring narratives of Kalash women through contemporary miniature.
Ejaz Khan, blending art and engineering through stone carvings inspired by Kalash architecture and mythology.
A documentary titled \u201cRediscovering Greater Chitral\u201d, produced by Hyat for PTV Global, was also screened. The film provides an intimate portrayal of the Kalash community and examines the evolving dynamics of their cultural environment.
Speaking on the occasion, curator and Nomad Gallery founder Nageen Hyat said: \u201cOur aim is to preserve and promote the heritage of the Kalash Valley, its beauty, and introduce its significance to a wider audience.\u201d
The exhibition is part of Nomad Gallery\u2019s ongoing commitment to promoting contemporary art and crafts for over four decades, particularly with a focus on women\u2019s economic empowerment and cultural preservation.
