Islamabad (Ghulam Murtaza): A multicenter research study involving 952 patients with Type 2 Diabetes from across Pakistan has been published in the international peer-reviewed journal BMC Endocrine Disorders, providing real-world evidence on the safety and effectiveness of empagliflozin, used alone or in combination with metformin.
The study, titled \u201cReal-world safety and effectiveness of empagliflozin alone or in combination with metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Pakistan,\u201d was published on September 28, 2026.
The six-month multicenter observational study included adults with Type 2 Diabetes who had inadequate glycemic control. Of the 952 participants enrolled, 765 completed the six-month follow-up. Researchers reported that median HbA1c declined from 8.8% to 7.4%, while significant reductions were also observed in fasting blood glucose, body weight and systolic blood pressure.
The study found a greater reduction in HbA1c among patients receiving empagliflozin in combination with metformin compared with empagliflozin alone. Renal parameters remained stable, while the incidence of hypoglycemia was low and serious adverse events were uncommon during follow-up.
The research involved clinicians and investigators from multiple institutions and clinical centers across Pakistan. The authors said the study provides important local real-world evidence on the use of empagliflozin in Pakistani adults with Type 2 Diabetes.
