Rabat (Special Correspondent): Pakistan’s newly appointed Ambassador to Morocco, Adil Gilani, in his first exclusive interview with Moroccan publication “Assahifa,” delivered a strong warning to India regarding escalating military tensions, stating that Pakistan would respond in an “effective and strong” manner if the aggression continues. He also indicated a potential shift in Pakistan’s long-standing position on the Western Sahara issue, acknowledging the “development and prosperity” in the southern regions.
Gilani, a key figure in establishing transparency and anti-corruption measures in South Asia through his founding role at Transparency International in Pakistan, has transitioned to a prominent diplomatic role. He previously served as ambassador to Serbia and contributed to national anti-corruption legislation.
In the interview, Gilani directly accused Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being a “cunning enemy” who undermines dialogue and exploits crises for electoral gains. He elaborated on Pakistan’s view of India’s “preemptive aggression,” cautioning that the region could descend into a nuclear confrontation and reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to a “firm and proportional” response if war is imposed.
Regarding the timing of India’s actions, Gilani noted the contradiction of India proposing joint talks with a May 8 deadline, only to withdraw on April 23 and subsequently launch missile strikes on Pakistani territory. He suggested this was a political tactic by Modi’s government during the election period, highlighting Modi’s history as an “anti-Muslim extremist” and his alleged responsibility for the 2002 Gujarat massacre.
When questioned about potential escalation, including threats to water sources, Gilani asserted that any continuation of military escalation would be met with a strong response. He stated that the Indus Waters Treaty does not allow for unilateral termination and that any such aggression would be addressed through appropriate channels. While emphasizing that Pakistan does not seek war, he affirmed the nation’s readiness to respond “appropriately, proportionally, and firmly” if conflict is forced upon it.
On the risk of nuclear escalation, Gilani stressed that Pakistan views its nuclear arsenal primarily as a deterrent and is a “responsible nuclear state” committed to its international obligations. He expressed hope that “wisdom prevails on the Indian side to avoid any further escalation.”
Regarding the UN Security Council’s response, Gilani stated that the international community has been regularly briefed and that the UN has advised India to refrain from further “adventures.” He assured that Pakistan would maintain open communication channels.
In a significant development, Ambassador Gilani hinted at a potential change in Pakistan’s stance on the Moroccan Sahara issue. Acknowledging the “development and prosperity Morocco has achieved in the Sahara,” he stated that Pakistan’s policy on the issue is “under review.” He emphasized that any solution acceptable to all parties under the United Nations framework would also be acceptable to Islamabad. This marks a notable departure from Pakistan’s previous position.
Gilani also highlighted the promising start to bilateral relations with Morocco, covering defense, economy, and technology. He expressed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening defense partnerships and exploring strategic economic partnerships, particularly within African markets and South-South cooperation. He affirmed the shared vision with Morocco in combating separatism, extremism, and promoting regional stability, underscoring the importance Pakistan attaches to its relationship with Morocco as a “key regional actor and a brotherly country with strong historical and cultural ties.”
